Here’s a brief synopsis of the issues the Board considered at the March meeting:

The UUCF board held it’s March meeting last night 3/22 (board meetings are regularly scheduled for the 4th Thursday of the month but our Common Read of the “Josseline” book conflicted this month. Next month we will resume at our regular time!) and I just want to let everyone know about upcoming events and whatnot:

Treasurer, Rob Carter, let us know that our pledges are about $2000 lower than last year and impacting our budget. If you’ve been thinking of supporting the church with a financial gift or increasing your pledge, now is the time.

We have postponed the start of the “Saving Jesus” series until September because it is a 12 week program and going into the summer did not seem prudent.

Children’s RE program will be scaled back or put on hiatus for the summer as well, many of us will be on vacation at various times.

We will be placing a donation jar at the church for the local Coats for Kids program. They must order very early from manufacturers to get the very best price on the 200+ coats they provide underprivileged children locally.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the Earth Hour volunteer black-out on 3/26 between 8:30 & 9:30 by turning off all lights for 1 hour.

On April 10, 2011, we are starting our Second Sunday Visitation by visiting First Unitarian Church in Louisville. Their service starts at 10:55 a.m. I think if we all meet at 9:30 on the west end of town (Exit 48, there is a Shell station that is closed and it has a big parking lot so we can park cars there and those of us with vans or SUVs can take others in our vehicles.) we should get there in plenty of time.

Please remember to sign up to bring Sunday Refreshments! Also sign up to clean the church, this seems to have fallen to one person and we should all be sharing in this responsibility.

Please donate paper towels (I think we are about out) and toilet tissue as you can. This saves the church money.

Our April Potluck will again be held at the church. Lots of good feedback from this month’s! Please invite friends! The more the merrier! Anyone want to toss a “theme” out there?

Our first yard sale for the church is scheduled for Saturday May 14, 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. If you have items to donate please bring them to the church and we can store them in one of the offices. Larger items probably should be brought closer to the date. Our lowest priced items will be $.50 so if you are undecided if an item is worth donating, if you don’t think it is worth 50 cents it probably doesn’t need to be offered for sale.
We will also sell baked goods for 50 cents. Brownies, cookies, cupcakes are probably the easiest items to sell. They should be bagged individually in sandwich bags. It’s best not to touch food directly. We will have the coffee pot fired up early and offer coffee to shoppers. We will sell donuts for 50 cents apiece as well. Please sign the Bakery sheet and what you will bake.
We will need helpers to prep for the sale probably on Thursday & Friday. We will price items with colored dots with signs showing the value of each colored dot. The pricing goes much faster that way. We will want everything ready to go Saturday morning because people will be there before our planned opening time (they always are) and though we will specify no early birds, we want everything ready to go at 8. I’ve put a sign up sheet on the cork wall for prep workers.
There is a sign up sheet for workers on the day of the sale as well. I’ve listed them in 3 hour increments, 7-10, 10-1, 1-close & clean up and folks with vans or trucks to haul left overs to Goodwill. We need a minimum of 4 people per shift to have two in the front room and 2 in the back. And probably more wouldn’t be a bad thing!
We will be needing banquet tables, card tables and/or sawhorses to make tables with the extra doors, lumber already at the church. Mark anything clearly that you bring for us to use.

If you have questions or comments, please let me know! Thanks so much for all your work for the church. UUCF is going to be a liberal voice in Frankfort and we are going to be loud!
Seeking Unity in Diversity

Main St., beginning March 10.

The public is invited to participate in the four-part series, which will be held at 7 p.m. Thursdays through March 31. Registration is $15, which includes the cost of the book. For information, call 223-5175.

The author, Margaret Regan, writes for the Tucson Weekly and has covered stories from the Arizona-Mexico border since 2000. She has won a number of journalism awards for her border reporting.

The book looks at all aspects of immigration, including stories gathered from immigrants, their families and support groups on both sides of the border; ride-alongs with Border Patrol officers in both captures and rescues of illegal immigrants; and interviews with residents along the immigrant trails.

There may be no better way to understand the muddle that is U.S. immigration policy than to read The Death of Josseline. It helps explain, on a human level, the ebb and flow of human labor across political boundaries.

- Ted Robbins, Southwest correspondent, National Public Radio

From the first White Christmas in several years right into the new year, we have been blanketed with snow. Odd how we use the term “blanket” that evokes warm thoughts to describe something that is decidedly NOT warm! Snow settles a serenity into my soul like none other. This girl loves extremes…snow or the beach…either makes me happy!
At UUCF we’ve kicked off our lay-lead services featuring the Seven Principles. John Seybold started with the First Principle, affirming the “inherent worth and dignity of every person”. John besought us to open our minds to seeing an individual’s worth and dignity. Recognizing it in every person, even those that appear to have no such substance!
David Rigsby is leading the February lay service, “Justice, equity, & compassion in human relations”.
Sue Carter will lead March’s 3rd Sunday Service about the third principle, “Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations”.
That leaves the final four Principles for YOU to choose from and conduct a service for our congregation! Please contact Pat or Marge about which Principle you would like to do!
I look forward to learning about the Seven UU Principles in this way. I assume I am not the only one who can use a refresher course in their meaning and application in my own life and that of our church. These services are excellent for inviting friends to our church. They are casual and informative. We are happy to tell visitors what our Community is all about!

The Unitarian Universalist Community of Frankfort officially opened its doors and collective arms to the community Sunday November 7, 2010. Our special guest, Dr. Dennis Rader, author and educator, presented the program for morning service. Dr. Rader engaged those present in discourse and thoughtful reflection concerning contemporary teaching styles and limitations.

Following the service, UUCF members welcomed visitors to have refreshments and linger for fellowship. Friends, old and new, dropped by our new church space at 859 East Main Street, Suite C (behind Eastside Diner and between PCPerks and Candy’s Body Art). Hopefully our All Welcome, Always attitude will invite them back!

A group walk to honor Tomma Graves will begin at 9am, Saturday, October 30, at Kentucky State University’s Exum Center. The walk is organized by the Franklin County Council on Family Abuse andKentucky State University in lieu of a “Take Back the Night” walk this year.

Tomma was a victims’ advocate who worked with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse in Franklin County. In the late Summer of this year, Tomma was herself the victim of a violent crime. She was found shot to death on August 2, 2010 in her truck in downtown Frankfort.

She was a graduate of Kentucky State University and the students, staff, and faculty of the school have planned this memorial walk in her honor. It is a fund raiser and they are still hoping for additional sponsorship and volunteers. The proceeds of the event will benefit a fund set up for Tomma’s two children.

The event will open up in prayer. Walkers will then hear a word from Tomma’s mother, a spiritual will be sung, the KSU marching band will play, and people will register and pick up t-shirts. Then the march will begin from the Exum Center, west on East Main, to the Capitol. After an open-mic there, the group will march back downtown and end up at the Pumpkin Festival on St. Clair.
